Iraq ended a 40-year World Cup absence — their only previous appearance was Mexico 1986 — by winning the inter-confederation playoff. Under coach Graham Arnold (borrowed from Australia), Iraq defeated Bolivia in the playoff final. All-time leading scorer Aymen Hussein is the attacking focal point, while veteran goalkeeper Jalal Hassan (100 caps) captains the side. A notable recent form highlight: a draw against Spain in a June 2026 friendly.
Path to qualification
Qualified by winning the inter-confederation playoff, defeating Bolivia 2-1 in the final in Monterrey, Mexico.
